Bridges Over Minefields is my debut solo album. It’s a collection of previously unreleased tracks I’ve written over many years. This album has been a long time coming, and at points I wasn’t sure if it would ever see the light of day, but I’m proud of what I’ve created and that I get to share it with you.
Like many musicians, the pandemic was the catalyst for this release. Long periods of lockdown and isolation forced my hand and I ended up producing the whole album myself. I performed every instrument, recorded and mixed every track, with the exception of some backing vocals performed by my lockdown buddy, aka my wife, Anna. Everything was done in my home recording studio in Ardeer, Melbourne.
The title refers to the idea that while a bridge is not the best solution to a minefield, it does serve an immediate purpose. I would describe Bridges Over Minefields as stock standard; it self-consciously uses tropes of the genre(s) with affection. It’s what I call my Monochromatic Standard Stock Rock.
The album explores a wide range of typical themes; love, loss, loneliness. Some are autobiographical, for instance Weak Man, Weak Heart recalls a profoundly moving and devastating moment I watched a man die. Many tracks reference my personal experiences of psychosis and recovery and feeling like an ecstatic mess, floating between exhilaration and torment on a cloud of interweaving rational nonsense. While I have written the songs from my unique perspective, I hope the listener can relate to fairly universal themes.
This album features my eclectic song writing, my baritone vocals and electric guitar playing. I’m heavily influenced by the blues, soul, and funk in the straight rock trio style. Horns, synths and other percussion punctuate the arrangements to extend the textures and rhythms. While stylistically diverse, it’s held together through simple song forms, choice of instrumentation, my own voice and general production and aesthetic sensibilities.
Bridges Over Minefields was written and recorded on Wurundjeri Country, home of the Kulin Nation.
